Course Overview

The Art of Memoir: creative tools and techniques for the non-fiction writer

This course guides you through the process of turning personal stories into engaging memoirs. Over three terms, you’ll develop your writing skills step-by-step:

Term 1: Finding Your Voice and Connecting with Readers

We’ll explore how to draw readers in using your senses, visualising scenes clearly, and balancing showing versus telling. You’ll learn to develop your voice—whether you want to be present and visible or more reserved—and how humor can add texture. We’ll discuss what’s important to you versus what resonates with your readers, and how to keep your writing focused and powerful.

Term 2: Structuring and Building Your Story

You’ll understand how a story is a promise to your reader, and how to craft a story arc that keeps interest alive. We’ll look at different ways to structure your memoir—starting from the beginning, end, or a key moment—and how to use techniques like the hero’s journey to give your story shape. You’ll experiment with pacing and flow, playing with time and perspective.

Term 3: Refining Your Technique and Making It Yours

In the final term, we’ll focus on polishing your writing. You’ll learn how to create immersive scenes using sensory details, write authentic dialogue, and transform memories into compelling narratives. We’ll also discuss when to tell rather than show, and how to keep your writing clear, honest, and engaging—without overthinking it.

By the end of this course, you’ll have the tools to craft personal stories that are true to you but also meaningful to your readers.
