3. Alankar (ornamentation)

• Introduction to the 10 that (scale system of Hindustani classical music)
• Ability to sing the swaras form different scales
• Concepts & definitions: dhwani, naad (Anahat & Ahat), 12 swaras, arohan, avrohan
• Introduction & elaboration of few basic ragas: Yaman, Bilawal, Bhairav, Kafi

Second term

• Complex combinations of swaras
• Ability to sing in the three octaves (saptak)
• Ability to sing in the 1st & 2nd laya, within different taals
• Subtle knowledge of the 12 swaras & gaayaki (imitation of the vocal style)
• Introducing different taan and ornamentation
• How to use the tanpura
• Rag Bageshri, Rag Asawari, Rag Vrindavani Sarang

Third term

• Including complex sargam, shruti alankar (within the rhythm patterns) in the regular practice
• Different styles of Indian classical music (bhajan, khayal, thumri)
• Basic introduction to Dhrupad music
• Development of bandish (composition)
• Rag Malkauns, Rag Durga, Rag Desh, Rag Ahir Bhairav
• Importance of tanpura in the Indian classical music
